OLEMA, Marin County — October 31, 2026. Fall and winter rain can make the Olema Valley Trail hazardous even when there is no formal closure. The National Park Service warns about substantial mud, seasonal flooding and a particular stream crossing where the water can become deep and fast.
Which section is most difficult?
The Point Reyes trail conditions page warns that a ford just south of the Teixeira Trail junction can carry knee-deep, opaque water with a strong current and an unstable rocky bottom. Hikers are advised to avoid the route after significant rainfall rather than attempt to cross dangerous water.
Does walking around the flood help?
Not necessarily. NPS specifically cautions that detouring off the designated trail into vegetation contributes to trampling and erosion, damaging sensitive habitat. For uncertain conditions, choose a different trail rather than widen the path.
What other options are nearby?
The Five Brooks Trailhead is about 3.5 miles south of Olema along Highway 1 and connects with several trails. Its parking, picnic and toilet facilities may make it a better starting point for some outings, but its connected routes still require condition checks.
How current are these warnings?
Trail status changes with rain, wind, maintenance and closures. The park notes that summaries may be updated periodically rather than in real time. Follow the latest ranger notices and weather advisories before travel.
